Stage 1 -It's all about finding our happy under the water.
1 Can you bob up & down underwater like a jellyfish?

Stage 2 - It's all about developing a great body position and leg kick
1 Can you swim like a whale, coming up for a breath and then carrying on
2 Can you float like a mushroom?
3 Can you perform a log roll?
4 Look at you cracking a 5m back swim!
Stage 3: It's all about getting a great arm pull
1 Can you master the log roll?
2 Can you kick breastroke for 10m
3 Can you sink under the water and push and glide off the wall.
4 Can you swim 10 metres with your arms out of the water, with a great arm pull
5 Let's swim 10 metres on your back?
2 Can you kick breastroke for 10m
3 Can you sink under the water and push and glide off the wall.
4 Can you swim 10 metres with your arms out of the water, with a great arm pull
5 Let's swim 10 metres on your back?
Stage 4: It's all about getting the breathing right.
1 Let's swim like a dolphin for five metres
2 Can you swim breastroke for five metres?
3 Can you push and glide from wall along pool floor
4 Can you master side breathing in front crawl for ten metres.
5 Can you swim backstroke for fifteen metres?
6 Now let's swim 25m
7 Finally we need to master treading water (or sculling in a shallow pool)

Stages 5-6 are the improver levels and follow the Swim England assessment criteria. We are not currently running these stages due to lack of sufficient pool space. We give out certificates for these Stages when they are passed.
Stage 5: It's all about working to standard.
This is the first stage Swim England standards are introduced
1 Perform a flat stationary scull on the back.
2 Perform a feet first sculling action for 5 metres in a flat position on the back.
3 Perform a sculling sequence with a partner for 30-45 seconds to include a rotation.
4 Tread water for 30 seconds.
5 Perform three different shaped jumps into deep water.
6 Push and glide and swim 10 metres backstroke*.
7 Push and glide and swim 10 metres front crawl*
8 Push and glide and swim 10 metres breaststroke*
9 Push and glide and swim 10 metres butterfly*
10 Swim 50 metres on your front or back
11 Perform a handstand and hold for a minimum of three seconds.
12 Perform a forward somersault.
13 Demonstrate an action for getting help.

Stage 6: It's all about going that bit further
1. Give two examples of how to prepare for exercise and understand why it is important.
2 Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into backstroke.
3 Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into front crawl.
4 Swim 10 metres wearing clothes.
5 Push and glide and swim front crawl to include at least six rhythmical breaths.
6 Push and glide and swim breaststroke to include at least six rhythmical breaths.
7 Push and glide and swim butterfly to include at least three rhythmical breaths.
8 Push and glide and swim backstroke to include at least six regular breaths.
9 Push and glide and swim 25 metres, choice of stroke is optional (performed to Swim England expected standards).
10. Perform a ‘shout and signal’ rescue.
11. Perform a surface dive.
